Royal Gramma (Gramma loreto)
Fish in the family Grammatidae. Moderate care. Reef Safe.
Quick facts
Appearance
A small, deep-bodied fish with distinctive bicolored coloration: the head and anterior body are bright purple or deep violet, while the posterior body and tail are bright yellow. The body shape is laterally compressed with a blunt snout and small mouth adapted for feeding on zooplankton in deep reef crevices.
Diet and feeding
Royal Grammas feed primarily on zooplankton and small crustaceans in the wild. In captivity, provide frequent small feedings of quality frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, and small pellets designed for planktivores.
Difficulty and care for the Royal Gramma
Moderately challenging for beginners. Royal Grammas require excellent water quality, stable conditions, and frequent small feedings. They are shy by nature and need plenty of rockwork or caves to feel secure, and they may hide extensively if stressed or intimidated.
Common health issues
Parasitic infections, bacterial infections, poor appetite under stress
Origin and habitat
Western Atlantic, occurring in deep coral reef habitats from Bermuda and the Bahamas south through the Caribbean to northern South America and the Amazon delta region.
