Appearance

Deep maroon to burgundy body with three distinctive white or pale yellow vertical bands; body is robust and somewhat flattened laterally. Males are smaller than females, and both sexes have sharp spines on the operculum (gill cover).

Diet and feeding

Feed a varied diet of high-quality omnivorous foods including mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood, quality flake and pellet foods. Feed 1–2 times daily in amounts they consume within a few minutes.
