Invertebrate in the family Patellogastropoda. Beginner care. Reef Safe.
Quick facts
Diet and feeding
Limpets are algae grazers that consume diatoms, microalgae, and film algae off rocks and glass. In mature tanks they may subsist solely on natural algae growth; supplement with blanched spinach or algae wafers if algae is scarce.
Origin and habitat
Widely distributed across Indo-Pacific coral reef habitats, including the Red Sea, East Africa, and extending to Hawaii and Australia.
Keeper notes
• Minimum 20 gallon tank • Herbivorous grazers that feed on microalgae, diatoms, and detritus on rock surfaces • Maintain temperature 72–78°F and pH 8.1–8.3 with salinity 1.023–1.025 • Nocturnal browsers; provide plenty of established rockwork with algae growth • Hardy and low-maintenance; rarely require supplemental feeding in mature reef systems
