Yellowfin Anthias (Anthias nicholsi)
Fish in the family Serranidae. Moderate care. Reef Safe.
Quick facts
Appearance
Yellowfin Anthias are small, elongated serranids with a predominantly orange-red body and distinctive yellow dorsal and caudal fins. Males are more intensely colored than females, with extended filamentous dorsal spines and a deeper orange hue. The head and gill plates feature bright coloration with subtle markings.
Diet and feeding
Feed small frozen foods including mysis shrimp, copepods, and high-quality marine flakes. Yellowfin Anthias are active planktivores and benefit from multiple small feedings daily of appropriately sized prey.
Difficulty and care for the Yellowfin Anthias
Yellowfin Anthias require stable reef conditions and consistent small-food feeding, making them moderately challenging for aquarists without established feeding routines. They are hardy once acclimated but can be sensitive to poor water quality and aggressive tankmates.
Common health issues
Starvation (if not fed frequently enough), parasitic infections, bacterial infections, lateral line erosion in poor water conditions.
Origin and habitat
Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea, East Africa, and extending eastward through Indonesia and the Philippines to the Great Barrier Reef and Polynesia.
