Appearance

Large, robust parrotfish with distinctive beak-like fused teeth. Coloration varies by life stage: juveniles are greenish to yellowish, while adults display brilliant blues, greens, and reds, particularly males which develop intensely colored heads and bodies with orange-red markings.

Diet and feeding

Obligate herbivore that feeds on algae and detritus by scraping coral rubble and reef surfaces. In captivity, provide high-quality marine algae sheets, seaweed-based pellets, and occasional vegetable matter such as blanched spinach or nori.
