Appearance
Terminal phase males display striking blue-green coloration with yellow markings on the head and pectoral fins, while initial phase fish and females are predominantly red-orange with white-edged scales. The species has a robust, laterally compressed body with a prominent beak-like mouth adapted for feeding on coral and rock.
Diet and feeding
Primarily herbivorous, feeding on coral polyps, macroalgae, and algae-covered rocks and sand in the wild. In captivity, provide high-quality spirulina flakes, nori sheets, and dedicated herbivore pellets supplemented with fresh macroalgae. Frequent grazing throughout the day is necessary to maintain health and coloration.
