Quick facts
Appearance
The Many-Spined Angelfish is a small, deep-bodied pomacanthid with dark coloration—typically dark blue to black—and distinctive spiny dorsal and anal fins that give the species its name. The body is compressed laterally, and mature individuals display subtle patterns or iridescence along the gill covers.
Diet and feeding
In captivity, feed a varied diet of high-quality prepared foods including small pellets, flakes, and meaty fare (mysis shrimp, chopped squid). Supplement with vegetable matter. Feed 2–3 times daily in small portions.
Difficulty and care for the Many-Spined Angelfish
This deep-water dweller is moderately challenging. It requires stable water conditions (72–79°F, pH 8.1–8.3, SG 1.020–1.025), a minimum 70-gallon tank, and patience acclimating to captivity. Not suitable for beginner aquarists.
Common health issues
Marine ich (Cryptocaryon irritans), fin rot, bacterial infections, internal parasites, loss of appetite in new specimens
Origin and habitat
