Appearance

Melichthys niger is a large, robust triggerfish with an entirely black or very dark gray body and a slightly compressed laterally profile. The dorsal and anal fins are distinctly soft-rayed and elongated, and the caudal fin is rounded.

Diet and feeding

Feed a varied diet of high-quality meaty foods including frozen or fresh shrimp, squid, and other marine proteins. Offer 1-2 times daily in portions they will consume within a few minutes. Occasional vegetable matter may be taken but is not required.
