Monitor what changes a decision
The most useful Home Assistant reef-tank entities answer one of three questions: is the environment stable, is life-support equipment behaving normally, and is the monitoring path still alive? Temperature, leak status, equipment availability, and power draw often provide more value than dozens of decorative dashboard states.
Rank signals by consequence and clarity. A wet leak sensor beside a sump is clear and urgent. A heater using an unusual amount of power is important but needs context. A pump entity called on is weak evidence by itself. A signal deserves a prominent card or notification when it is reliable, understandable, and connected to an action the reef keeper can take.
The goal is not to predict every failure. It is to notice important departures sooner and preserve enough history to investigate them.
A practical priority order for many reef systems.

Temperature and heater activity belong together
A temperature value is stronger when heater activity is visible beside it. If temperature is falling while the heater draws its normal wattage, the room, heater capacity, flow, or probe location may deserve attention. If the heater is marked on but draws no power, the state is not telling the full story. If temperature rises while no expected heat source is active, lighting, pumps, room temperature, or a separate heater may be involved.
Correlation is not diagnosis. A power trend and temperature trend can narrow the investigation without proving the cause. Confirm with an independent thermometer and physical inspection before changing a life-support system.
Combined readings are more informative than one card alone.

Power is useful when normal is known
A return pump, skimmer, fan, or UV unit may have a repeatable power range. A sudden zero can indicate lost power or a disconnected device. A gradual change can justify cleaning or inspection. Variable-speed equipment can change power normally, so compare like operating modes and schedules rather than treating one wattage as universal.
Do not convert power into a promise about mechanical performance. A pump can draw electricity while blocked or damaged. Watts tell you about electrical behavior, not flow. Where the consequence matters, pair power with another measurement or a physical check.
Availability is part of every reading
An old value can look reassuring if the dashboard does not make staleness obvious. Device availability, last update time, and bridge connectivity deserve attention because a perfect temperature from hours ago is not a current temperature.
Test how each integration represents failure. Some entities become unavailable. Some retain a last-known value. Some cloud integrations stop updating without a clear local network symptom. Your monitoring plan should distinguish “normal,” “abnormal,” and “not currently known.”
