Power and state answer different questions

A smart plug that reports on is describing the relay state. It is not proving that the attached heater is heating or that a pump is moving water. A power sensor reports the rate of electrical use, normally in watts. If the plug is on and the equipment draws its expected power, you have stronger evidence that something electrical is happening.

Power is not energy. Watts describe the current rate of use. Kilowatt-hours describe accumulated use over time. Home Assistant supports both when the device and integration provide the correct entities. For equipment behavior, instantaneous watts are often the clearer first signal. For operating cost and long-term consumption, energy is more useful.

Reef Trak can display wattage when the selected Home Assistant device exposes it. It does not estimate missing watts from a switch state and does not claim that electrical demand proves mechanical performance.

State, power, and energy should not be treated as interchangeable.

Learn the normal pattern before setting expectations

A heater naturally cycles. Its outlet may remain on while the thermostat inside the heater turns the element on and off. A variable-speed pump can draw different power in feed, night, wave, or maintenance modes. A skimmer may change after cleaning or as air and water flow change. One number cannot represent every legitimate operating condition.

Observe several days of normal operation. Record minimum, typical, and high values for known modes. Note schedules and maintenance. A power threshold becomes useful only when it respects the device’s actual behavior and the sensor’s update interval.

Avoid overly tight alarms. A brief zero during a scheduled pause is not a failure. A few watts of standby draw may be normal. A cloud integration that updates every minute cannot support a five-second reaction. Build expectations around the source you actually have.

Power patterns can suggest an investigation without proving a diagnosis.

What power cannot prove

A return pump can draw power while its intake is blocked, impeller is damaged, plumbing is closed, or output has fallen. A heater can draw power while placed in poor flow or while its temperature control behaves incorrectly. A skimmer can consume normal power while overflowing. Electrical demand is evidence about the load, not a complete measurement of the aquarium process.

Use a second signal where consequences are high. Temperature helps interpret heater power. A water-level or flow sensor can add context to pump power. Physical inspection remains essential. The strongest monitoring combines independent observations rather than treating one convenient sensor as truth.

Put power beside aquarium history

A wattage change becomes easier to explain when it appears beside equipment cleaning, pump replacement, a feed-mode schedule, room-temperature changes, or a maintenance note. Reef Trak places selected Home Assistant power readings in the tank’s management environment so the keeper can compare them with the rest of the reef record.

The application shows the data Home Assistant supplies. It does not diagnose a failing pump from watts alone. Recent history is a prompt to inspect, not an automated verdict.

A useful first power-monitoring project

Choose one device with a clear cycle, such as a heater, or one device with a stable normal range, such as a fixed-speed return pump. Verify the smart plug is rated appropriately for the electrical load and environment. Keep connections protected from salt spray, drips, and accidental immersion, with proper drip loops and ground-fault protection as required.

Name the power entity clearly, observe it for a week, compare it with physical operation, and document known schedules. Then decide what deserves a dashboard card or notification. Monitoring earns trust through repeated agreement with the real aquarium.
