Choose the measurement before the plug

For reef aquarium monitoring, the most useful smart-plug feature is often power measurement rather than remote switching. A basic on or off state can tell you what the relay reports. Wattage can show whether the attached equipment is drawing electricity. Energy can summarize use over time. Availability shows whether the plug is still communicating.

Not every smart plug exposes every value, and not every Home Assistant integration is local. Check the exact model in the official integration documentation before buying. Confirm the electrical rating, load type, local requirements, update interval, failure behavior, and whether power data are actually supported.

The plug should match the job. Monitoring a low-power lamp is not the same as placing a switching device in the supply path of a return pump or heater. The consequences of failure and accidental control are different.

Match the evidence to the equipment

A heater has a clear high-power cycle that can be compared with temperature. A fixed-speed pump may have a stable range that changes with fouling or obstruction. A variable-speed pump changes by design. A light follows a schedule and may draw different power across intensity. A dosing pump runs briefly, so the plug and integration must update fast enough to capture the event.

Begin with one device and observe normal operation. If the power sensor reports too slowly, rounds aggressively, or becomes unavailable during ordinary network changes, do not build a critical alert around it. A monitoring plan should reflect real sensor performance rather than the claims on a product page.

Electrical suitability comes first

Aquariums combine water, salt, humidity, and continuous electrical loads. Use listed equipment appropriate for the voltage, current, motor or heater load, and local electrical code. Keep plugs and connections dry, elevated, strain-relieved, and protected by drip loops and ground-fault protection where required. Never place an indoor-only device where salt spray or water can reach it.

Some loads have startup current higher than their running value. Some smart plugs are not suitable for motors, heaters, or continuous high loads even when the printed wattage appears adequate. Follow both the equipment and plug manufacturers’ specifications and consult a qualified electrician where needed.

Avoid accidental control of critical loads

A monitoring plug may also expose a switch. That does not mean the switch should be used. Disable or hide controls where the platform allows, restrict permissions, and preserve a manual recovery path. Think through the plug’s state after power loss, network loss, firmware updates, and Home Assistant restarts.

Build a focused aquarium view

Name the plug for the attached equipment and tank, not for its outlet number. Show the current wattage, availability, and relevant recent trend. Keep energy totals if cost or long-term demand matters. Hide unused voltage, frequency, signal strength, and diagnostic entities from the primary reef dashboard.
