Temperature is a high-value first signal
Temperature affects metabolism, oxygen availability, animal stress, and the behavior of aquarium equipment. It is also relatively straightforward to measure continuously, which makes it a strong first Home Assistant reef-tank sensor.
The goal is not to stare at every tenth of a degree. It is to establish the tank’s normal daily range, notice meaningful drift, and know when the sensor has stopped reporting. A stable reef can have small predictable swings from room temperature, lighting, pumps, and heater cycles.
Home Assistant can display the current entity state and preserve history. Reef Trak can show selected aquarium temperature information beside the tank’s parameter, equipment, maintenance, and note records. Neither platform can make an inaccurate or poorly placed probe trustworthy.
A useful temperature view includes more than the current number.

Probe placement and verification matter
Place a probe where it measures representative, moving aquarium water and remains submerged through ordinary operation and maintenance. Avoid direct contact with a heater, lighting heat, a cold draft, or a stagnant pocket unless that location is the specific thing you intend to measure.
Compare the sensor with an independent thermometer before trusting alerts. Agreement at one point does not prove agreement across the whole range, but it can reveal a large offset or failed probe. Document the comparison date and any correction rather than silently changing an alert threshold to fit a questionable reading.
If two sensors disagree, do not average them automatically. Determine which instrument is more reliable, inspect placement, and compare against a known reference. A precise-looking digital value can still be wrong.

Correlate heater behavior without overdiagnosing
Heater power can help explain temperature demand. Longer heating cycles during a cold room period may be normal. A heater marked on but drawing no watts may be internally satisfied, disconnected, or failed. A heater drawing continuous power while temperature falls may be undersized, poorly placed, damaged, or facing unusual heat loss.
Use the combination to choose what to inspect. Do not let Home Assistant become the only temperature controller. The heater’s own thermostat, an appropriate independent limit, correct sizing, safe mounting, and electrical protection remain important even when monitoring is excellent.
Design alerts for action, not anxiety
Use thresholds based on the actual tank, sensor accuracy, normal swing, and how quickly someone can respond. A delay can prevent one bad packet or a brief maintenance exposure from creating a critical alarm. A separate unavailable alert can be more honest than treating missing data as a safe value.
Consider warning and urgent levels. A warning can prompt closer observation. An urgent alert can be reserved for a sustained value that threatens livestock. Test the notification path and make sure another household member knows what the alert means.
Connect the trend to the reef’s history
Temperature changes make more sense beside room events, equipment replacement, maintenance, power outages, lighting changes, water changes, and livestock observations. Record the confirmed finding, not just the alert. “Temperature warning” is an event. “Heater plug loosened during sump cleaning and was reseated at 19:10” is useful aquarium history.
