Fish in the family Cirrhitidae. Moderate care. Not Reef Safe.
Quick facts
Appearance
The Two-Spotted Hawkfish is a small, robust hawkfish with a reddish or orange-red body marked by two distinctive dark spots or blotches on its flank, from which it derives its common name. The fish has the characteristic hawkfish body shape with anterior dorsal-fin spines and enlarged pectoral fins used for perching on rocks and coral.
Diet and feeding
Feed small meaty foods including finely chopped seafood, small crustaceans, and quality frozen foods such as mysis shrimp and bloodworms. Hawkfish are aggressive predators and will hunt small fish and invertebrates in the aquarium.
Difficulty and care for the Two-Spotted Hawkfish
The Two-Spotted Hawkfish is moderately challenging to maintain. While hardy, it requires careful tankmate selection due to its aggressive and predatory nature toward smaller fish and invertebrates, and it must not be housed in reef aquariums with coral and small crustaceans.
Common health issues
Parasitic infections (ich), bacterial infections, aggression-related stress
Origin and habitat
Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea, East Africa, and extending east to Hawaii and the Coral Triangle. Found in reef environments from the Indo-Pacific, not in the Atlantic.
