Appearance

Redspotted Hawkfish are small, stocky members of the Cirrhitidae family with distinctive red spots covering the body. The fish displays a mottled tan to reddish base coloration with numerous red or orange spots, and possesses the characteristic cirri (whisker-like filaments) above the eyes that give hawkfish their name. Their compressed body and large head are typical of the genus Amblycirrhitus.

Diet and feeding

Feed small meaty foods including finely chopped frozen shrimp, mysis shrimp, small fish pieces, and quality carnivore pellets. They hunt small crustaceans and fish in the wild and benefit from a varied diet of appropriately sized prey.

Difficulty and care for the Redspotted Hawkfish

Redspotted Hawkfish are moderately difficult. They require stable water conditions, proper feeding of meaty foods, and careful tank mate selection due to their semi-aggressive nature and tendency to consume very small fish or shrimp.

Common health issues

Parasites (ich, marine velvet), stress-related disease if housed with overly aggressive tank mates, dietary deficiencies if fed monotonous diet

Origin and habitat

Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean and Bahamas. Occurs from Florida south through the tropical western Atlantic to Brazil.
