Quick facts
Appearance
Callechelys marmorata is a slender, elongated eel with a mottled brown and white marbled coloration pattern. The body is cylindrical and relatively compact for a conger eel, with small pectoral fins and a continuous dorsal-anal fin. Distinguishing features include a rounded snout and a patterned body that provides camouflage in sandy and muddy substrates.
Diet and feeding
Feed small meaty foods including frozen mysis shrimp, small fish pieces, or marine-based pellets. These eels are primarily nocturnal hunters and prefer to feed at night; offer food 2-3 times weekly.
Difficulty and care for the Marbled Snake Eel
Moderate difficulty. Marbled snake eels require stable water conditions, a sandy substrate for burrowing, and careful feeding management. They are nocturnal and may consume small fish or crustaceans, making them unsuitable for reef environments.
Common health issues
Bacterial infections, parasites, poor water quality sensitivity
Origin and habitat
Western Atlantic, found in coastal waters from Florida and the Gulf of Mexico south through the Caribbean to South America, typically in shallow marine and brackish environments.
