Quick facts
Appearance
The Golden Hawkfish is a small, deep-bodied fish with striking golden-yellow to orange-red coloration covering most of its body. It has prominent cirri (filaments) extending from the nostril and along the dorsal fin, and a slightly elongated snout with a terminal mouth. The body is compact and robust, with a notable hump at the head.
Diet and feeding
Feed small frozen or fresh meaty foods such as chopped shrimp, mysis shrimp, and small pieces of squid. Offer varied small crustaceans and fish flesh. Feed 2-3 times daily, adjusting portions to tank bioload.
Difficulty and care for the Golden Hawkfish
Moderate. The Golden Hawkfish is hardy once established but demands live rock perches, precise feeding, and careful tank mates due to its aggressive territorial behavior. Poor acclimation or sudden parameter swings can cause stress and disease.
Common health issues
Parasitic infections (especially ich), bacterial infections, loss of appetite with poor acclimation
Origin and habitat
Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea to the Hawaiian Islands, including the Great Barrier Reef and throughout the coral triangle.
