Diet and feeding

Detritivore that feeds on organic matter and microorganisms in sand. Supplement with quality liquid foods, phytoplankton, or prepared cucumber foods 2–3 times weekly.

Origin and habitat

Indo-Pacific region including the Red Sea, East Africa, and across to Indonesia and the Philippines.

• Minimum 55 gallon tank with deep sand bed (4+ inches) for burrowing and feeding • Maintain temperature 72–78°F, pH 8.1–8.3, and salinity 1.023–1.025 • Feeds primarily on detritus and organic matter in the substrate; supplement with small food particles if needed • Nocturnal and reclusive; provide hiding spots and low light stress • Sensitive to sudden water changes and copper-based medications; avoid disturbance when burrowed
