Diet and feeding

Carnivorous predator feeding on small fish, crustaceans, and other invertebrates. Requires meaty foods offered 2–3 times per week.

Origin and habitat

Indo-Pacific region from the Red Sea and East African coast to the Hawaiian Islands and Great Barrier Reef.

• Minimum 75 gallon tank with gentle water flow and plenty of live rock and hiding places • Maintain temperature between 72–78°F and salinity 1.023–1.025 • Feeds primarily on sponges; specimens require reliable access to appropriate sponge food sources • Highly sensitive to copper, medications, and poor water quality; requires pristine conditions • Nocturnal and reclusive; rarely seen during daylight hours in reef systems
