Diet and feeding

Herbivorous; feeds on macroalgae, microalgae, and detritus. Prefers Caulerpa, Ulva, and other soft algae. Requires established algae growth or regular supplementation of algae sheets.

Origin and habitat

Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and along the coast from Florida to Brazil.

• Minimum 55 gallon tank with plenty of algae and macroalgae growth as primary food source • Requires stable water conditions at 72–78°F (pH 8.1–8.3, SG 1.023–1.025) • Nocturnal grazer; provide dim lighting and numerous hiding places • Can be sensitive to sudden water changes and copper-based medications • May release toxic compounds when stressed, which can harm tank mates and affect water quality
