Fish in the family Muraenidae. Expert care. Not Reef Safe.
Quick facts
Appearance
The Zebra Moray is an eel with distinctive yellow and dark brown/black vertical striping running the length of its elongated body. It has small gill openings near the head and lacks pelvic fins. The body is compressed and serpentine, with the mouth typically held in a gaping position that resembles a threat display but is normal respiratory behavior.
Diet and feeding
Feed live or frozen foods such as shrimp, small fish, and marine meats. Zebra Morays are active hunters that prefer to eat whole prey items. Feed 2-3 times weekly in established aquariums, adjusting based on tank bioload.
Difficulty and care for the Zebra Moray
Zebra Morays are challenging aquarium residents requiring expert-level care. They demand secure enclosures with plenty of crevices, precise water parameters, and careful feeding protocols. They are not suitable for reef aquariums due to predatory behavior on small fish and invertebrates.
