Yellow-Striped Cardinalfish (Apogon cyanosoma)
Fish in the family Apogonidae. Moderate care. Reef Safe.
Quick facts
Appearance
Small, nocturnal cardinalfish with an elongated body and two dorsal fins. Coloration is reddish or brick-red overall with distinctive yellow or orange horizontal stripes running along the sides. Large eyes are typical of the genus, reflecting their crepuscular and nocturnal behavior.
Diet and feeding
Feed small frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, copepods, and small frozen preparations. Feed 2–3 times daily in small amounts. They may be slow to acclimate to feeding in bright conditions but will eventually learn feeding schedules.
Difficulty and care for the Yellow-Striped Cardinalfish
Moderate difficulty. Yellow-striped cardinalfish are hardy once established but require proper acclimation, stable water conditions, nocturnal feeding considerations, and a dim environment with appropriate hiding places to reduce stress.
Common health issues
Starvation (slow feeding acclimation), parasitic infections, lateral line erosion
Origin and habitat
Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea, East Africa, and extending through Indonesia and the Philippines to the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Triangle.
