Quick facts
Appearance
The Threeband Pennantfish displays a distinctive yellow body with three vertical black bands running across its sides. It has a small mouth, deeply forked tail, and a characteristic dark stripe through the eye. The dorsal fin is tall and pointed, giving the fish its characteristic pennant-like silhouette.
Diet and feeding
Feed a varied diet of high-quality meaty foods including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood, supplemented with small amounts of algae-based foods and quality flake or pellet foods. Feed 1-2 times daily.
Difficulty and care for the Threeband Pennantfish
Moderate difficulty. H. chrysostomus requires stable water conditions, appropriate tank size, and a varied diet. It is less hardy than some other Heniochus species and may be finicky as a captive feeder, making it better suited to intermediate aquarists.

Parasitic infections, lateral line erosion, poor appetite if not acclimated properly
