Ornate Angelfish (Genicanthus bellus)
Fish in the family Pomacanthidae. Moderate care. Reef Safe.
Quick facts
Appearance
The Ornate Angelfish displays striking vertical yellow and dark blue or black striping on the body, with an ornate facial pattern and yellow accents on the dorsal and anal fins. The fish has a compressed, disc-like body typical of Pomacanthidae, and the contrast between bright yellow and dark bands becomes more intense with age and in well-maintained aquaria.
Diet and feeding
Feed a varied diet including high-quality angelfish pellets, mysis shrimp, and spirulina-based preparations. Offer food 2–3 times daily in small portions; these fish benefit from frequent light feedings rather than large meals.
Difficulty and care for the Ornate Angelfish
The Ornate Angelfish is moderately difficult, requiring stable water conditions, a well-established tank with adequate rock work for grazing on microalgae and small invertebrates, and a patient acclimation period. It is less hardy than dwarf angels but more adaptable than some large angelfish species.
Common health issues
Marine ich, Fin rot, Swim bladder disorders, Bacterial infections, Parasitic infestations
Origin and habitat
