Appearance

Hippocampus kelloggi is a medium-sized seahorse with a robust, fully-plated body typical of the Syngnathidae family. Coloration ranges from tan to brown or greenish, often with banding or mottling that provides camouflage in seagrass and kelp habitats. The prehensile tail is fully developed, and the dorsal fin is moderately tall.

Diet and feeding

Feed small live foods such as copepods, amphipods, and enriched frozen Mysis shrimp. Seahorses require frequent feeding of tiny prey items. Supplement with prepared seahorse diets if live copepods are unavailable.

Difficulty and care for the Great Seahorse

H. kelloggi is challenging to keep due to its specific dietary needs (live copepods and small frozen foods), susceptibility to poor water quality, and requirement for low-energy tank environments with stable cool temperatures. Not recommended for beginners.

Common health issues

Starvation from inability to compete for food, gas bubble disease, bacterial infection, parasitic copepods, head and tail rot

Origin and habitat

Eastern Pacific Ocean, primarily along the coasts of California, Mexico, and Central America. Found in shallow seagrass beds and kelp forests from the Gulf of California south to Peru.
