Appearance

Fukui's Cardinalfish is a small, deep-bodied fish with predominantly reddish-orange coloration and distinctive white or pale lateral stripes running along its body. It has large eyes typical of cardinalfish and a small, terminal mouth adapted for feeding on small crustaceans and plankton. This nocturnal species exhibits the characteristic cardinalfish body shape with an arched back and rounded abdomen.

Diet and feeding

Feed small, meaty foods such as frozen copepods, mysis shrimp, and amphipods. Offer food in small portions 2-3 times daily, as this species feeds on small prey items in its natural deep-reef habitat. It may be reluctant to eat large frozen foods.

Difficulty and care for the Fukui's Cardinalfish

Fukui's Cardinalfish is moderately difficult due to its specialized diet of small live or frozen plankton and its preference for low-light, deep-reef conditions. Success requires careful feeding protocols and stable water parameters.

Common health issues

Starvation from inadequate feeding, parasitic infections, poor water quality stress

Origin and habitat

Western Pacific, specifically found in the Indo-Pacific region including waters around Japan and the Philippines. Endemic to deep reef habitats in their native range.
