Fish in the family Serranidae. Hard care. Reef Safe.
Quick facts
Appearance
Anthias noeli is a small, deep-water serranid with a predominantly deep red to burgundy body coloration. The head and gill covers display bright orange-red hues, while the body is dusky red with subtle banding. Mature males develop more intense coloration and may display elongated dorsal spines.
Diet and feeding
In captivity, feed high-quality frozen planktonic foods such as mysis shrimp and copepods 2–3 times daily. Supplement with small pellets. This deep-water species requires frequent feeding of appropriately sized prey items.
Difficulty and care for the Cuban Anthias
Anthias noeli is a challenging species due to its deep-water origin, requiring pristine water conditions, stable temperature, and consistent feeding. It is recommended only for experienced reef aquarists with established systems.
Common health issues
Feeding refusal, bacterial infections, parasitic infestations (common in deep-water species), and sensitivity to poor water quality.
Origin and habitat
Western Atlantic, endemic to Cuba and nearby Caribbean waters. Found in deep coral reef environments at depths of 200–400 meters, making it one of the deeper-dwelling anthias species.
