Caribbean Sharpnose Puffer (Canthigaster caribbean)
Fish in the family Tetraodontidae. Moderate care. Not Reef Safe.
Quick facts
Appearance
A small puffer with a body length typically under 3 inches. Coloration is highly variable, ranging from yellow, tan, brown, to greenish with darker reticulations, spots, or banding patterns. The distinctive sharp beak and ability to inflate the body like other puffers are characteristic features of the Tetraodontidae family.
Diet and feeding
Feed on small crustaceans, mollusks, and other invertebrates. In captivity, provide a varied diet of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped squid, and small snails; hard-shelled foods help maintain the beak.
Difficulty and care for the Caribbean Sharpnose Puffer
Moderate difficulty. Requires a well-established tank, stable water chemistry, and careful feeding to prevent beak overgrowth. The species is aggressive toward other fish and will eat ornamental invertebrates, making it unsuitable for reef systems.
Common health issues
Beak overgrowth, parasitic infections, and stress-related diseases if housed with aggressive tankmates.
Origin and habitat
Western Atlantic from Bermuda, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean south to Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico. Found in shallow coral reef and seagrass environments typically at depths of 1–30 meters.
