Cleanup crew first
Start with a small cleanup crew (CUC). Two or three snails (Nassarius, Trochus, Cerith) and one or two hermit crabs. They eat diatoms, leftover food, and detritus, and they let you confirm the tank is genuinely cycled by watching their behavior for a few days.
- Nassarius snails — bury in sand, emerge to scavenge food
- Trochus snails — eat algae from glass and rock
- Cerith snails — clean sand and rock
- Blue-leg hermit crabs — scavengers, low impact
First fish: pick a hardy beginner species
Wait at least a week after the cleanup crew. Then add a single hardy fish and watch for a week before adding another. Best beginner reef fish:
- Ocellaris Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) — iconic, hardy, comfortable in small tanks
- Green Chromis (Chromis viridis) — peaceful schooler; works in pairs or trios in 75+ gallon
- Firefish (Nemateleotris magnifica) — peaceful, hovers in mid-water, shy with active tank mates
- Royal Gramma (Gramma loreto) — bright purple/yellow, reef safe, hides in rock
- Yellow Watchman Goby (Cryptocentrus cinctus) — burrowing, fascinating, pairs well with pistol shrimp
First corals: beginner-safe choices
Wait a few weeks after the first fish to confirm parameters stay stable under a tiny bioload. Then add a beginner coral. Best beginner reef corals:
- Green Star Polyps (Briareum) — encrusting, fast-growing, almost indestructible
- Pulsing Xenia — soft coral with pumping action; grows fast
- Zoanthids (Zoanthus) — colorful polyps, tolerant of changing parameters
- Mushrooms (Discosoma, Ricordea) — easy, low light, low flow
- Leather corals (Sarcophyton, Sinularia) — large, hardy, tolerant
- Toadstool Leather (Sarcophyton glaucum) — classic beginner LPS
Avoid SPS (Acropora, Montipora) and demanding LPS (Goniopora, sun corals) for the first 6 months. Tank chemistry needs to be locked in before SPS reward your effort.
The stocking rhythm
- Week 0: Cycle complete, 20% water change
- Week 1: Add cleanup crew (3–5 snails + 1–2 hermits)
- Week 2: Add first fish
- Week 4: Add second fish if first is settled and parameters stable
- Week 6: Add first beginner coral
- Week 8+: Add another coral or fish every 1–2 weeks, slowly
