TL;DR

Plain baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, the same alkalinity ingredient used in many aquarium buffers. Food-grade calcium chloride supplies calcium. Magnesium chloride hexahydrate plus plain USP Epsom salt can make a balanced magnesium part. Food-grade pickling lime is calcium hydroxide, which reef keepers know as kalkwasser.

Those statements do not make every deicer, cleaner, bath salt, pool product, or bag of lime safe for a reef. A chemical name tells you the active ingredient. The grade, concentration, water of hydration, manufacturing impurities, and added fragrances or surfactants determine whether two products are actually interchangeable.

Why the reef bottle costs so much

A commercial reef additive does more than hold powder. A reputable supplier verifies purity, chooses a known form of the chemical, provides a concentration, writes instructions, packages it against moisture, and stands behind the product. That work has value.

But the underlying chemicals are often ordinary commodities. A bottle of reef-branded alkalinity can cost around $25 while the plain baking soda needed for a comparable correction may cost roughly 30 cents, depending on the tank, recipe, and local package price. Once a tank consumes alkalinity every day, the packaging premium becomes hard to ignore.

The smart goal is not “buy the cheapest bag.” It is “buy the same known chemical at an appropriate grade, then use verified math.”

The useful non-reef-labeled products

The table below covers the practical household and food-industry substitutions that have well-understood reef uses. These are chemical starting points, not permission to dose an unlabeled product blindly.

Alkalinity: plain baking soda really is the classic shortcut

Arm & Hammer states that baking soda is 100% sodium bicarbonate. The FDA food-ingredient rule identifies sodium bicarbonate as NaHCO3 and requires Food Chemicals Codex specifications for the food-grade ingredient. In reef water, bicarbonate adds alkalinity without the sharp pH rise of soda ash.

Randy Holmes-Farley’s classic lower-pH DIY recipe dissolves 297 grams, about 1 1/8 cups, of plain baking soda in enough RO/DI water to make one U.S. gallon total. This is the alkalinity half of his weaker Recipe 2. It is still a highly concentrated stock, not something to pour by eye.

If the tank also needs a pH lift, the higher-pH recipe converts baking soda to sodium carbonate. The original method starts with 594 grams, about 2 1/4 cups, of baking soda spread on a tray and heated at 300°F for one hour, then uses the converted material to make one gallon of stock. Follow the complete published recipe and calculator rather than mixing the strong alkalinity stock with an arbitrary calcium product.

Baking soda is not baking powder. Baking powder contains acids and other ingredients. Washing soda is also not an automatic substitute because a laundry product may contain fragrance, surfactants, or other additives. Use a known pure chemical.

Calcium: buy calcium chloride, but know which calcium chloride

Calcium chloride is the calcium half of many two-part systems. It is also sold for pickling, food processing, dust control, concrete work, and ice melting. Those uses do not share one purity standard.

The safest non-reef route is FCC or clearly labeled food-grade calcium chloride with an assay or certificate of analysis. Ball Pickle Crisp, for example, is sold as food-grade calcium chloride with no preservatives. It is useful for a small correction, though bulk food-grade calcium chloride is usually more economical for daily dosing.

The form matters. Anhydrous calcium chloride, calcium chloride dihydrate, and a 77 to 80% flake do not deliver the same calcium per gram or per cup. Holmes-Farley’s recipe used 500 grams of a specific 77 to 80% flake to make one gallon. A more concentrated anhydrous product needs a different amount. This is why a universal “cups per gallon” instruction can be wrong even when both bags say calcium chloride.

Do not assume modern driveway deicer is safe because an old reef recipe named one historical product. Manufacturing and impurity profiles can change. Food grade or a documented reef-tested source costs more than the cheapest deicer and still saves heavily over premixed bottles.

Magnesium: Epsom salt is only half the story

Plain Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate heptahydrate. Current U.S. drug labels are easy to verify through DailyMed, and a suitable package will say 100% magnesium sulfate USP, heptahydrate, with no fragrance, oils, or bath additives.

Epsom salt alone can raise magnesium, but repeated use also keeps adding sulfate. A better long-term magnesium supplement combines magnesium sulfate with magnesium chloride so the chloride-to-sulfate balance stays closer to seawater.

For the magnesium part that accompanies the classic DIY calcium-chloride two-part system, the improved recipe uses five cups of magnesium chloride hexahydrate and three cups of Epsom salt, dissolved and brought to one gallon total. That ratio is specific to a two-part system that is already adding chloride through calcium chloride. A magnesium-only correction, kalkwasser tank, or calcium-reactor tank uses a different chloride-to-sulfate ratio.

This is the chemistry lesson that applies to the whole article: a pure ingredient can still be used in the wrong proportion. Buy by chemical identity and dose by the recipe that matches the complete system.

Kalkwasser: pickling lime is calcium hydroxide

Kalkwasser is simply a German name for limewater. The powder used to make it is calcium hydroxide. Mrs. Wages labels its pickling lime as food-grade calcium hydroxide with no additives or preservatives, which makes the underlying chemistry the same as a pure reef-labeled kalkwasser powder.

Calcium hydroxide is powerful because it supplies balanced calcium and alkalinity while strongly raising pH. A saturated solution is extremely basic. Keep the powder out of eyes and lungs, keep it dry and sealed, mix it carefully, let solids settle, and dose only the clear solution through a controlled method.

Pickling lime is not garden lime, quicklime, builders’ lime, or a generic masonry product. Those names can refer to different chemicals or grades. The label must say food-grade calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2, without additives.

Cleaning products belong in a separate category

Food-grade citric acid and plain white vinegar can replace many aquarium-branded pump and equipment cleaners. They dissolve calcium carbonate deposits and are easy to rinse away. That makes them useful reef-room products, but not routine aquarium supplements.

Never confuse “safe for cleaning” with “safe to dose.” Household cleaners can include detergents, fragrances, corrosion inhibitors, dyes, or undisclosed blends. Use a known single ingredient, remove the equipment when practical, rinse it thoroughly, and keep cleaning containers separate from dosing containers.

The products I would not substitute casually

Some internet shortcuts are chemically plausible and still poor recommendations. Pool phosphate removers, fertilizers for nitrate or phosphate, driveway deicers, hardware-store ammonia, scented bath salts, builders’ lime, laundry boosters, and industrial cleaners can contain unknown concentrations or impurities that matter in seawater.

If the goal is to save money on a well-understood major-ion supplement, food-grade baking soda, calcium chloride, magnesium salts, and pickling lime are sensible. If the goal is to add a trace element, nutrient, medication, algaecide, or dechlorinator, the margin for a labeling mistake is much smaller. Use a product with a documented aquarium dose or a full certificate and an established reef formula.

A five-point buying check

Before any non-reef-labeled product reaches the dosing shelf, read the whole label and the technical documents. “Pure” on the front is marketing unless the package or certificate tells you what that means.

  • Identity: the exact chemical name and formula match the recipe
  • Grade: FCC, USP, or clearly documented food grade for routine supplements
  • Form: anhydrous, monohydrate, dihydrate, hexahydrate, or stated solution concentration
  • Additives: no fragrance, surfactant, dye, anticaking blend, essential oil, or mystery ingredient
  • Documentation: lot, assay, SDS, or certificate of analysis from a supplier you can identify

How to dose DIY chemistry without gambling

Test before you dose. Use actual system water volume, not the number printed on the aquarium. Choose a calculator entry that matches the exact recipe and chemical form. Make the correction in stages, add stock to a high-flow area, and retest before deciding the first dose was too small.

Keep calcium and alkalinity concentrates in separate containers and add them at separate times or locations so they do not precipitate together. Label every jug with the chemical, recipe, concentration, mix date, and a warning. Use dedicated measuring tools and store powders away from children, pets, food, and humidity.

The bottom line

You do not need a reef logo on sodium bicarbonate for it to raise alkalinity. You do need to know that it is actually sodium bicarbonate, that nothing else is mixed in, and how strong your stock solution is. The same rule carries through calcium chloride, magnesium salts, and calcium hydroxide.

That is where the real savings live: common chemicals, appropriate grades, published recipes, careful labels, and measured dosing. Skip the expensive water and bottle when the contents are truly equivalent. Keep paying for verification when the contents are not.
