White's Seahorse (Hippocampus whitei)
Fish in the family Syngnathidae. Expert care. Reef Safe with Caution.
Quick facts
Appearance
White's Seahorse is a medium-sized seahorse with a distinctive head shape and prehensile tail. The body coloration ranges from pale white to cream with darker markings, and adults typically display prominent bony plates and tubercles along the body. Unlike fish, seahorses have a horse-like head, upright posture, and fused gill covers.
Diet and feeding
Feed small live foods such as copepods, amphipods, artemia (seahorse-sized), and mysis shrimp 2-3 times daily. Seahorses have small mouths and slow feeding rates; provide food in proximity to their location rather than relying on open-water foraging.
Difficulty and care for the White's Seahorse
White's Seahorse requires expert-level care. Specialized water parameters, live food availability, a calm environment, and careful tankmate selection make this species suitable only for experienced aquarists with dedicated seahorse-keeping experience.
Common health issues
Gas bubble disease, pouch infection (males), fin rot, weight loss, inability to feed in high-flow systems
Origin and habitat
Eastern Australia, primarily along the coast of New South Wales from Sydney to southern Queensland, in seagrass beds and coastal waters at depths up to 40 meters.
