Deep Water Basslet (Gramma sp. 'Deep Water')
Fish in the family Grammaidae. Moderate care. Reef Safe.
Quick facts
Appearance
A small, deep-bodied fish with striking bicolored purple and orange/red coloration. The anterior half is typically deep purple, while the posterior half transitions to bright orange or red. The body is compressed laterally with a moderately large mouth suited to its planktivorous diet.
Diet and feeding
Feed small frozen copepods, amphipods, and other small zooplankton. Meaty pellets and brine shrimp are accepted. Frequent small feedings (2–3 times daily) work better than large occasional meals.
Difficulty and care for the Deep Water Basslet
Moderate difficulty due to its deep-water origin and planktivorous requirements. It needs frequent small feedings of appropriate-sized zooplankton and stable cool conditions, making it less forgiving than shallow-water reef fish.
Common health issues
Marine Ich, Fin Rot, Swim Bladder Disorder, Bacterial Infections, Fungal Diseases
Origin and habitat
Deep-water Atlantic reefs, particularly off the coasts of Bermuda and the Bahamas, at depths exceeding 1,500 feet where they are collected via submersible or specialized deep-sea collection methods.
