omnivore
Keeper notes
Can reproduce in freshwater and is invasive in many regions; never release into the wild. A filter-feeding clam that buries in fine substrate and strains suspended food (phytoplankton/green water and powdered foods) from the water. WARNING: in clean, well-filtered aquariums there is rarely enough suspended food, so clams commonly slowly STARVE; you must target-feed phytoplankton or maintain a food-rich (e.g. green-water) tank. A dead clam can foul water fast, so remove any that gape and don't close. Needs hard, calcium-rich water for shell health. Copper sensitive — never use copper meds. Invasive — never release.
