Appearance

Small, globe-shaped puffer with a tan to yellowish-brown body covered in short spines. The body is generally uniform in coloration with dark bars or spots; the spines are most prominent when the fish inflates, and there is a small mouth with beak-like teeth.

Diet and feeding

In captivity, feed a varied diet of meaty foods including frozen mysis shrimp, chopped clams, squid, and occasional crustaceans such as small crabs and snails. This species will crush hard-shelled invertebrates with its powerful beak, so live snails and small crustaceans can be offered as enrichment.
