Appearance

Round flat tan-to-brown disc covered with yellow-ringed black ocelli (eye spots), a long whip-like tail bearing one or more serrated venomous barbs, and a pale underside.

An advanced, large-bodied predator with a venomous tail barb capable of a serious painful sting — handle with extreme care and never bare-handed. Eats fish, shrimp, and invertebrates. Needs a huge footprint (width matters more than height) and pristine water; sensitive to nitrates and copper. Subject to import/keeping restrictions in many states and countries.
