Highfin Coralfish (Coradion altivelis)
Fish in the family Chaetodontidae. Hard care. Not Reef Safe.
Quick facts
Appearance
A distinctive butterflyfish with a deep, laterally compressed body. The body is primarily yellow-orange with bold black diagonal stripes running across the head and sides. The dorsal fin is notably elongated and elevated, giving the species its common name "Highfin," and displays yellow coloration with black markings.
Diet and feeding
The Highfin Coralfish is primarily corallivorous, feeding on coral polyps and coral tissues in the wild. In captivity, offer finely chopped coral flesh, mysis shrimp, and specialized prepared foods designed for butterflyfish; feeding acceptance can be inconsistent.
Difficulty and care for the Highfin Coralfish
Highly challenging for most aquarists. This is a corallivorous butterflyfish with poor feeding acceptance in captivity and strict dietary requirements. Success is best achieved only by experienced keepers with the ability to provide live coral feeding opportunities or prepared corallivore diets.
Common health issues
Starvation due to poor feeding acceptance, parasitic infections, lateral line disease, fin rot
Origin and habitat
Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea, East Africa, and extending eastward through the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia to the Philippines and Indonesia.
