Appearance

Females flush a striking deep-purple/black belly with a white-bordered dorsal during breeding; males are more subdued with eye-spot (ocellus) markings on the tail.

Peaceful except when breeding, when a pair defends a cave. West African riverine species. Will eat shrimp. Some forms appreciate a little salt/harder water. Keep as a single bonded pair with caves.
