Appearance

Rounded, beak-shaped hybrid with a small permanently-open mouth and large eyes; typically bright orange-red, sometimes sold artificially dyed.

Man-made hybrid (no wild population; first bred in Taiwan around 1986, generally from a midas/red-devil-type crossed with a redhead-type Central American cichlid)

Keeper notes

Man-made hybrid with a deformed mouth that cannot fully close, plus a rounded body; less able to defend itself, so it is only semi-aggressive and can be bullied despite a cichlid attitude. Avoid dyed ('jellybean') specimens.
